Urban design action plan for Koundampalayam Coimbatore | Urban Design

The project focuses on sustainable re-structuring of the Koundampalayam area of Coimbatore. It specifically targets the Sanganoor Pallam (canal) and the surrounding areas. The site consists of a Solar Power Plant, a Public park developed from a waste mound, waste collection and composting yard, Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) residential development, Sanganoor Pallam Bridge, Government land allocated for the proposed Dr. MGR Market relocation project, open government land for proposed Muslim cemetery, and open government land for Tamil Nadu Water Supply & Drainage Board. The waste mound, which was originally an abode to migratory birds, served as a waste dump yard and waste treatment centre until 2003. This area was then capped and converted into greenfield in the year 2012.

An urban design action plan is the strategic framework for the future development of the Koundampalayam precinct that will guide the stakeholders to create a resilient community as it evolves over the next decade. The resilient community, through their engagement, leadership and vision can in turn construct the built and natural environment which is safe, accessible, imaginative, exploratory, inclusive, sustainable and meets the aspiration of future generations with the aid of the action plan. Urban design actions require collaborative efforts by leaders, authorities and citizens so as to optimize the benefits of the proposals and add value to the city as a whole.
